Pleased to finally show you all, our newest piece, the Izakaya lantern!
This bright red izakaya Japanese lantern is typically seen displayed outside izakaya restaurants throughout Japan. An izakaya is a casual-style Japanese restaurant where drinking and lively conversation is as important as eating. This izakaya lantern is probably one of the most recognized lanterns in Japan. Izakaya are sometimes called Akachochin (lantern made of red papers), because these paper lanterns are traditionally found in front of an izakaya and often used as the signs for cheap drinking and eating
Paper lanterns have become one of my favorite items to sculpt, and I love the way the ribs give a steady feel when holding the mugs. The satin finish and black accent wash emulates the weathered look of these lanterns, the bold white text reads "izakaya" just as it would as they line the city streets in the social hubs of Japan.
